The City of Buena Vista is excited to announce the three finalists for naming our new “Town Square”! After reviewing dozens of creative submissions from the community, the selection committee has narrowed the choices to three names that reflect the City’s rich history, vibrant spirit, and shared vision for the future.

The following finalists have been selected, with narratives submitted by the community that highlight why each name is a great fit and the local significance it represents:

1. Green Valley Junction honors one of Buena Vista’s former names, Green Valley, reflecting the City’s early history before it was officially renamed in the late 1800s. The addition of “Junction” acknowledges the City’s rich rail history, symbolizing a place where paths cross, much like a railroad junction. Situated at the heart of the city, the space serves as a meeting point for all—uniting the past with the present and emphasizing the interconnectedness of the community. This name reflects both the historical roots and the ongoing connection within Buena Vista.
2. Magnolia Square draws inspiration from the beautiful Magnolia Avenue, where the gathering space is located. The name evokes a sense of elegance and timeless charm, symbolizing a welcoming space for the community to gather, grow, and create lasting memories. Just as the magnolia tree is known for its strength and beauty, Magnolia Square represents a vibrant, flourishing hub at the heart of Buena Vista—a place where connections blossom and the spirit of the city thrives.
3. Picadilly Commons honors the beloved Piccadilly Restaurant, which stood on part of the site in the 1950s. This name evokes a sense of nostalgia, connecting Buena Vista’s past with its vibrant present. The name also creates a fun parallel to the renowned Piccadilly Circus in London, symbolizing the space as a lively gathering place for community connection and creativity. We invite the public to share any additional memories or information about the Piccadilly Restaurant to help further enrich this piece of Buena Vista’s history.

 Together we built it, together we name it – and now, the community is invited to help decide the winning name! As part of this fundraiser, your vote will not only determine the name but also support the final touches needed to bring the space to life. The voting period is open now and will conclude on May 1, 2025.

How to Cast Your Vote
Voting is easy and open to everyone! Here’s how you can participate:

• Online Voting: Click HERE to cast your vote. The online platform requires a $5 minimum donation but every dollar goes toward completing the “Town Square”.
• In-Person Voting: Secure ballot boxes will be available at high-traffic locations, including restaurants, gas stations, the Treasurer’s Office, the Glen Maury Park Office, and “Town Square”. Simply stop by, fill out a ballot envelope, add your donation (any amount counts!), and drop it in the box.

Votes will be tallied bi-weekly with updates shared on the “City of Buena Vista, VA – Economic Development” Facebook and Instagram pages to keep everyone informed. The name with the highest total donations will be declared the winner.

Why a Donation?
Just as the successful fundraiser for Penny Park many years ago engaged residents in its development and naming through donations, the “Town Square” naming initiative now provides an opportunity for everyone to leave their mark on a space that will serve as a vibrant hub for generations to come. While funding from the City and previous donations have carried the project to near completion, additional resources are still needed to bring it across the finish line. Each vote represents a meaningful investment in the City’s future, fostering a sense of pride and ownership in this shared achievement.

A Community Effort and Celebration
The “Town Square” began as a community vision, and its construction is being powered by the hard work, donations, and expertise of our residents. While voting is underway, construction will continue, culminating in a Summer celebration event where the winning name will be unveiled. This celebration will honor everyone who contributed to the project, recognizing their role in creating a lasting legacy for Buena Vista.
